Lift Truck Operation Requirements

Worksafe BC requires that lift truck operators be adequately trained as follows:
- Instructor has the necessary knowledge, training and experience
- Operator receives both classroom and hands on training
- Operator knowledge and performance is tested and documented
- Operator is regularly re-trained and re-evaluated (minimum: every two years)
- Each and every operator receives the proper training
Required operator skills include:
- Ability to work in pedestrian areas
- Ability to conduct safety check of equipment
- Ability to document unsafe conditions
- Knowledge of blind spots, controls and instrumentation, special limits for vehicle and workplace, refueling or charging requirements, vehicle capacity
- Skill at manipulating, stacking and unstacking loads, operating in narrow aisles and other constrained areas, operating in unique or hazardous conditions or locations and operating on ramps and grades
- Understanding of regulations and operating instructions, of operation during slippery surface conditions and of the stability of lift trucks and loads
